The Cueva de los Verdes is one of the most extraordinary caves in Lanzarote, an island that, thanks to its volcanic activity, boasts a unique geology. The cave is the result of a volcanic eruption that, about 4,000 years ago, created a vast system of underground galleries. The cave stands out not only for its natural beauty, but also for the incredible lava formations that decorate its walls and for the fascinating history linked to its discovery.
The name of the cave, which means “Cave of the Greens”, comes from the color of its walls, which take on different shades of green thanks to the oxidation of minerals over the centuries. The cavity is also known for its historical use as a refuge during pirate raids.
As part of a research project organized in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua, we have created a three-dimensional survey of this volcanic complex.

The data obtained were used for various scientific purposes, in particular to make comparisons with volcanic cavities present on other planets such as the Moon or Mars.
The laser scanner survey also made it possible to obtain a three-dimensional model full of useful information to evaluate the structural conditions of this tourist site that attracts approximately 300,000 visitors from all over the world every year.
From an informative point of view, through the 3D survey it was possible to create animations and interactive models to give the public the opportunity to explore the inaccessible parts through the use of virtual reality viewers installed in the museum located at the Jameo del Agua.
