THE SALT CAVES OF ATACAMA DESERT

(CORDILLERA DE LA SAL, CHILE)

“Reading the salt caves of Atacama” is a research project organized by the University of Bologna, La Venta Explorazioni Geografiche association and realized thanks to the support of National Geographic Society. This project aims to explore the salt caves of the Atacama Desert in Chile, studying its morphologies through the use of laser scanner and 3D close-range and UAV photogrammetry.

During the 20 days of expedition, 3 salt caves have been scanned for a total of about 2.5km, as well as several outdoor areas characterized by the presence of “penitentes”, strange rock forms present in this desert and documented through close-range photogrammetry techniques and with the use of a drone. For this project, we also dealt with the photographic and video documentation with drone and 360 ° cameras.
